Careers in animation is an annual event for people considering employment in the local animation industry. Representatives from the industry will discuss their careers, background, the kinds of work they do, who gets hired, what training is required, portfolio/presentation tips and other basics.

Members were eligible to bring one guest to Lucasfilm in the Presidio to see films nominated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science in the animated shorts category. Host Ron Diamond presented the films and most of their creators as well!

Don Hertzfeldt sent Everything Will Be OK, JJ Sedelmaier sent new work from his studio including Psyche and The Ambiguously Gay Duo, Alex Budovsky sent Last Time in Clerkenwell, Tippett Studios presented an impressive reel including Enchanted and Gene Hamm showed The Adventure of the Talking Clothes. The program also included George Schwizgebel’s Jeu, reels from Pat's Animation, AxisOrigin, and Wild Brain. It was worth braving the wet roads to attend!

Our Twelfth Night Christmas Party

Animation from around the world was shown, including ASIFA Iran, The Bezadel Academy of Arts and Design (Jerusalem) and the Art Institute in Bournemouth (UK). We couldn't watch everything that was stacked up in the screening room, but better too much than too little. (Speaking of which, we also feasted on holiday goodies and even exchanged a few white-elephant Xmas gifts. Maybe that's a case where a little is too much!)

The affair was hosted by Ron Merk. Ron is a triple-threat writer/director/producer (Marco Polo: Return to Xanadu, 2001) and an all-around terrific guy. Thanks again for your gracious hospitality, Ron.

Best of ASIFA-East
Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007 | San Francisco

Winners of the 38th Annual Animation Competition were screened at the Exploratorium’s McBean Theatre. Best In Show went to Don Hertzfeld’s Everything Will be OK.First Place in Independent Animation went to PES for Game Over. PES also won First Place in the commercial category for Human Skateboard, an excellent pixilation that you can see on their website.

The Excellence In Animation award in the commercial category was given to Hide and Seek. Second Place went to Pat Smith's Puppet, an excellent hand drawn work. Third Place went to David Chai’s Cole Needs Women. David teaches at San Jose State University.

Animator Duan Jia of the Beijing Film Academy visited the Bay Area with a program of films from China, including Te Wei's Feeling From Mountain and Water (1988) Zhou Keqin & A Da's Monkeys Fish the Moon (1981). Additional screenings took place at the Pacific Film Archive and The Rafael Film Center.
